Changing threat landscape

In a threat landscape where data breaches and cyber-attacks are rife, no business can afford to take their security measures for granted.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has developed prioritised mitigation strategies to help cyber security professionals in all organisations mitigate cyber security incidents caused by various cyber threats.

The team at Sentrian recognise that most businesses are already making good progress on a number of benchmarks, however we have identified three cyber security mitigation strategies that, due to world events, should be given immediate attention.

Essential Baseline Protections

Next-Generation
Firewall

What are Next Generation Firewalls?
Next generation ‘NextGen’ Firewalls are a more advanced version of the traditional firewall. Traditional firewalls focus specifically on the source and destination of traffic into and out of your networks. This approach used to work well where attacks could mostly be determined on the type of traffic and where it had come from. Unfortunately, with the advent of work from anywhere and a huge number of new attack and malware types, these types of defenses are outdated and leave businesses vulnerable to novel threats.

NextGen Firewalls have much more detailed insight into what enters and leaves a network because of their ability to know which applications are generating traffic, which users the traffic is attributable to and what type of content is being transferred.
Strategic Focus:
NextGen firewalls focus on web content filtering, application firewalling of inbound / outbound traffic and incident detection & response. By utilising a NextGen firewall you:
  • Increase the chances of identifying and blocking advanced network threats
  • Reduce the threat of malware delivery through a better understanding of what is 'normal' and what is not

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

What is MFA?
Passwords are increasingly easy to compromise. They can often be stolen, guessed, or hacked — you might not even know someone is accessing your account.

Multi-factor authentication adds a second layer of security to your online accounts. Verifying your identity using a second factor (like your phone or another mobile device) prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password.
Strategic Focus:
Multi-factor authentication for applications and access to data can help reduce 99.9% of account compromise attacks. As password theft is the easiest method for an attacker to gain entry to an organisation, MFA represents a near guaranteed method of rendering this method useless. By using MFA, this mitigation strategy focuses on:
  • Ensuring a user is who they say they are
  • Limit the potential for data loss due to credential theft

Application Control (Whitelisting)

What is Application Control?
Unlike the traditional practice of application blacklisting, which prevents undesirable programs from executing, whitelisting is more restrictive and allows only apps that have been explicitly permitted to run.

Using a whitelist that allows only applications that have been explicitly approved offers more protection against malicious software, rather than the looser standard used by application blacklists, which permit any software to run unless it has been discovered to be malicious and has been added to the blacklist.
Strategic Focus:
Application control to prevent execution of unapproved/malicious programs including apps, scripts and installers. By whitelisting, this mitigation strategy focuses on:
  • Prevent Malware Delivery and Execution
  • Limit the Extent of Cyber Security Incidents

Talk cyber security with your Client Services Manager

As cyber threats change, you need to as well. What worked yesterday may no longer be sufficient to keep you and your clients data safe. With ongoing turmoil and current events, the threats from private hackers and hostile states are increasing which means that we must be continually re-evaluating our defenses.
